The magnetic compass is fitted on the upper bridge exactly center line of the ship   It is referred to as standard compass     1. D ry C ard    2. W et C ard   A compass point north because all magnets have two poles north pole, south pole.   The north pole of the one magnet attracted towards the south pole of another magnet     DRY CARD COMPASS   A light aluminum ring about 254mm in diameter is attached to a brass hub by silk cord which is threaded in and out through holes in the ring.   This tight silk cord is act like bicycle wheels.   There is no other connection or support between the ring and the hub.   Silk cord is used because it doesn’t shrink or stretch due to moisture or change in atmospheric temperature.     Card support: -     The bottom of the hub has small cap fi tt ed with a sapphire bearing surface.   This rests on a pivot tipped with iridium which is hard nonmagnetic metal....

ITEMS TO BE INSPECTED DURING HOLD INSPECTION.


  1. Check that the designated compartments are clean, dry and ready to receive cargo .
  • Holds must be properly swept and cleaned from previous cargo residue.
  • Loose rust or loose paint should be removed.
  • Make sure hold are free from all stains.
  1. Check that drainage and bilge suction are working effectively and bilge wells are dry. Bilges to be sweetened for some particular cargoes and covered with burlap and cemented.
  2. No leakage from ballast tanks and ballast pipelines.
  3. Sounding and air pipes passing into holds are rust free and clean.
  4. Ensure cargo battens are in correct position and bot damaged.
  5. Check hatch lightings are in good condiion.isolate the lights if it posses fire hazard for the cargo.
  6. Ensure and inspect all means of access to the compartments are safe.
  7. Guard rails and safety barriers should be seen to be in place.
  8. Ensure all necessary fixed and portable fire fighting appliance are ready for immediate use .
  9. Inspect ventilators.
  10. Cargo securing points should be in good condition.
