The magnetic compass is fitted on the upper bridge exactly center line of the ship   It is referred to as standard compass     1. D ry C ard    2. W et C ard   A compass point north because all magnets have two poles north pole, south pole.   The north pole of the one magnet attracted towards the south pole of another magnet     DRY CARD COMPASS   A light aluminum ring about 254mm in diameter is attached to a brass hub by silk cord which is threaded in and out through holes in the ring.   This tight silk cord is act like bicycle wheels.   There is no other connection or support between the ring and the hub.   Silk cord is used because it doesn’t shrink or stretch due to moisture or change in atmospheric temperature.     Card support: -     The bottom of the hub has small cap fi tt ed with a sapphire bearing surface.   This rests on a pivot tipped with iridium which is hard nonmagnetic metal....

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS OF LIFE SAVING APPLIANCES


The requirements for Life saving appliances (LSA) unless prescribed otherwise by Administration having regard to particular voyage on which the ship is constantly engaged, all LSA prescribed shall:

  • constructed with proper workmanship and materials
  • if exposed to sunlight, resistant to deterioration
  • personal life saving appliances, unless otherwise specified, shall remain operational through out temperatures of -15oC to +40oC.
  • Other life saving appliances shall not be damaged in stowage throughout air temperatures of -30oC to +65oC.
  • Life saving appliances which are likely to be immersed in seawater during their use, they must be able to operate throughout sea water temperature of -1o C to +30o C.
  • where applicable, be rot-proof, non-corrosive, not to be unduly affected by seawater, oil or fungal attack.
  • Use vivid reddish orange colour or a comparably high visible colour on all parts where this will assist detection at sea and be fitted with retro reflective material.
  • If they are to be used in a sea way, it must be capable of satisfactory operation in that environment
  • Administration must mark the approval information and operational restrictions (if any)
  • where applicable be provided with electrical short circuit protection to prevent injury/damage.
